This evening, I delivered a presentation of the key findings of a recent co-authored article in the Archaeological Journal on the rediscovery of the ‘Smiling Abbot’ fragment of early 14th-century effigial grave-slab, perhaps from Valle Crucis Abbey. It was a pleasure to follow the publication with a public talk at Llangollen Museum in the presence of the sculpture itself, and with two of my three co-authors in the audience. I couldn’t resist a ‘selfie’ with the Smiling Abbot himself! Altogether, it was a great evening to round off an unexpected and distinctive research project!
